An indoor climbing wall was first built at Newton Rigg College by the Newton Rigg Mountain Activities Club (MAC) back in 1998. This was made out of some scrap wood, some chicken mesh, and a few random holds.
We are glad to say that the wall has evolved a lot since those days, first with the MAC Club, together with the University, building a 56 square meter bouldering wall, and a small lead wall. These facilities were used frequently by students on outdoor courses, as well as MAC Club members in the evenings, and participants on courses with Frontier Education.
Recently, (2006) the lead climbing wall was extended, and now has over 45 routes, to a height of 10.5 meters (35 feet). The wall also includes overhanging sections, as well as an overhanging rock molded section, and an absail tower.
Once the building work was completed, a team of 9 Newton Rigg students, and I Newton Rigg Graduate, undertook the task of opening the climbing wall for public use, and organising and running all the aspects of the Climbing Centre.
Since opening, the Climbing Centre has been improving, with new routes, equipment and facilities being added frequently.
Our aim for the future is to continually grow and improve the Newton Rigg Climbing Centre, and to allow students from the College the opportunity to experience running a business, by taking an active role within the running of the Newton Rigg Climbing Centre.
